Whitby (Central) AA Tryout Policy and Process for 2018/2019 Season

Since 2013, the associations of Central Region have been working together to grow the sport of ringette in our region at all levels from house league, to recreational, to competitive, through to adult teams. Our goal is to ice competitive teams at the most appropriate level in order for players to achieve success, develop new skills as individuals/team, and have fun.

The policy is reviewed on an annual basis.

For the 2018/2019 ringette season, the Whitby Ringette Association has been awarded the U14AA and U19AA teams. These teams, hosted in Whitby, will be representing Central Region and will be determined after the final tryout and when all players have accepted offers to play. The host association has been determined, in advance, through the Central Region board-appointed panel.

An assessment will take place during the first tryout to determine if there are enough players to form a AA team, as well as the skills and ability to play at the top 7 level of the province. While the growth and development of players is an important value, it is the desire of Whitby Ringette that teams should be able to demonstrate at tryouts that the potential exists to achieve a level of success.

AA Tryout Registration:

All players are strongly encouraged to attend tryouts. This is an opportunity to test the skills you have developed over the past season, as well as your game sense, to see if you are ready to take on the challenge of becoming a AA player. Don’t count yourself out before tryouts.

Players that do not attend the Whitby (Central) AA tryouts are not eligible to attend tryouts outside of the region and will not be granted a permission to skate/release.

ORA Operating Manual, Section 9.1.15

Where level of play is offered, a player must attend Provincial tryouts in their association. If the level of play is not offered in Ontario Ringette Association Membership Services 19 their home association, the player must attend Provincial tryouts at the next closest association. Any player not meeting this standard will not be allowed to play at the Provincial level for the current season.

Cost of Tryouts:

Registration:

If a player is unable to attend tryouts for a valid reason (i.e.: injured, away at school, traveling out of country) but intends to try out, they must request an exemption in writing to the host association president. This exemption must be documented prior to the first tryout date.

Permission to Skate forms:

In accordance with the Operating Manual of the Ontario Ringette Association, section 9.1, all players must provide a permission to skate form at the tryout. Local association presidents will arrange for the forms to be completed in advance, and, blank forms will be available at the registration desk.

All players must register and pay at the desk before receiving a pinnie. Payment can be made by cash.

Assignment of pinnies is under the direction of Whitby Ringette and not of the coaching staff. A player will receive a pinnie with the colour and number recorded on the registration sheet. At the second and third tryout, the player will receive the same pinnie colour and number.

On-ice plan:

The coach of the respective AA team will decide the tryout plan.  The coach is responsible for recruiting the person to run the on-ice tryout.  In the event that an age division needs to be split into two groups, due to size, then the same try-out plan will be delivered to both groups.

Evaluation:

It is the expectation of parents, players, local association executives, and the Whitby Ringette board that evaluations will be completed in a fair and equitable manner. Whitby Ringette, on behalf of Central Region, will endeavor to recruit a team of evaluators who are knowledgeable of the skills required at the AA level at the respective age division, are independent of the players in that division (ie. No previous coaching contact), are independent of the appointed coach to the respective AA team, and, can help make informed decisions in the selection of players.

Posting of Results:

After the first tryout: Within 24 hours of the first tryout, the results will be posted on the Whitby Ringette website (www.whitbyringette.com) and the facebook page (Whitby ringette official facebook page). The results will be posted by pinnie colour and number therefore it is essential that players/parents record this information before handing in their pinnie. After the second tryout: There will be a player and parent meeting immediately following the second tryout where the head coach will make a presentation on their team and player philosophy, on-ice and off –ice plans and expectations, tournament requirements, travel, and budget.

This information will enable families to consider the time, travel and financial requirements of a AA team irrespective of proposed fundraising activity. If a family is unable to meet these requirements, then a message can be given to the coach to indicate the player will not proceed to the final tryout. If a player is invited to the third or final tryout, and accepts the invitation, then it is considered understood that the family can meet the obligations of being a member of the AA team.

Within 24 hours of the second tryout, the results will be posted on the Whitby Ringette website  (www.whitbyringette.com) and the facebook page (Whitby ringette official facebook page).  The results will be posted by pinnie colour and number therefore it is essential that players/parents record this information before handing in their pinnie.

After the third tryout: Within 24 hours of the third tryout, the head coach will begin to telephone players to offer positions on the team. The coach will have 3 days to complete the calls.

Announcement of Head Coach: The announcement of the head coach will be made prior to tryouts.

Respect and integrity:

Tryouts is a stressful time for all players who are committed to performing their best. Whitby Ringette is committed to making tryouts fair for everyone at all levels of play. To this end, we will be strictly monitoring discussions at the rink between coaches and players at all levels. No one has the right or authority to declare the formation or the composition of any AA team in advance of tryouts or during tryouts. Coaches will face disciplinary action if this occurs.

Recruitment of players to teams within the region or out of the region will also result in disciplinary action under the ORA, Membership Services, 9.2: The intent is to allow associations to form teams at the levels they wish without concern for interference, intentional or otherwise, from any other associations. Recruitment of players, which is defined as direct contact of players without their association’s knowledge and approval, will not be tolerated.” This rule also applies within Whitby Ringette at the A and B levels so that individual associations have an opportunity to offer a fair tryout without interference from another local association.

Parent Conduct:

Continually building on lessons learned from previous tryouts has helped shaped the tryout plan for this year. Constructive comments and feedback is always welcome. Should parents have any questions or comments during tryouts, please direct them to the president or Whitby Board representative in attendance at the tryouts. If we cannot provide an immediate answer, we well get back to you as soon as we can. Not everyone attending AA tryouts will make the team and it is natural that thoughts will be turned toward A tryouts. Recruitment of players, by parent or by bench staff, will not be tolerated. Whitby Ringette has the right to remove parents from the  tryouts should they be found/overheard recruiting players.

You owe it to your player to provide a positive atmosphere, encouragement, and support during their AA effort.

Ontario Ringette Association – Player Tryout and Release Policy

All associations and regions must abide by the policies and procedures of the Ontario Ringette Association. We encourage all of our members to read the Membership Services Operating Manual, section 9, as it pertains to player tryout and release policies.

Of particular note:

Section 9.1.1

A player may request permission to try out and subsequently be released for the following reasons:  Level of play not available  Age group not available  Other

Section 9.1.15

Where level of play is offered, a player must attend Provincial tryouts in their association. If the level of play is not offered in Ontario Ringette Association Membership Services 19 their home association, the player must attend Provincial tryouts at the next closest association. Any player not meeting this standard will not be allowed to play at the Provincial level for the current season.

If a player attends tryouts in the home association or region, they can then request and be automatically granted permission to skate. If a player does not provide a signed permission to skate form, then the player can be denied a subsequent release.

Player release - A signed permission to skate form does not grant a release to a player from the home association or region.

Section 9.1.7

If a player has been released to an A or AA team, for reason “Level of Play”, that team will be committed to remain at the A or AA level for the remainder of the season and the team cannot retreat to any lower level of play.

9.1.9

Each year a player’s first loyalty must be to their home association. If the home association hosts tryouts for their level of play they must attend and if selected must remain with their home association. If released on level of play from their home association and their “Current Association” hosts tryouts for their level of play they must attend and if selected must remain with their “Current Association”. If their “Current Association” does not offer or does not accept the player then the “Current Association” relationship is terminated and they must follow their regions closest association policies based upon their home association.
