Organization - Whitby Wild U12 Win Provincial Ringette Gold in Epic Overtime Thriller
Submitted By Stanton MacKellar on Wednesday, April 3, 2019
It was set up to be the U12 ringette thriller of the season and, girl, it did not disappoint. Whitby Wild and Burlington Blast, two familiar foes, battling it out again for tournament glory. With previous matchups going both ways, this would be the final time they face off against each other this season. This time it was for the big prize: to be crowned Provincial champions.

The action on the ice saw Burlington shoot out to an early 2-0 lead leaving Whitby with work to do to get back into the game. Despite the pulsating tempo on the ice, Whitby kept their composure fighting hard to tie the game before Burlington pulled ahead again.

The nail-biting action had brought the fans out of their seats. The packed arena was making noise now and they stayed on their feed for the rest of the game. They knew they were witnessing something special this day.

With seven minutes left, Whitby head coach, Ian Clyde looked at the scoreboard. His team was down by two. But he wasn’t panicking. He knew his players had it in them to perform magic. He knew they weren’t ready to accept silver.

To wild jubilation of the parents and fans, Whitby dig deep and pulled back two unanswered goals to level it at 4-4 by the midway point of the second half. Now Burlington was on the back foot. Taking advantage of the shift in momentum, Whitby struck again pulling ahead for the first time, with only a minute left in the game.

Whitby only needed to hold on and victory was theirs. But Burlington is a great adversary and this team you can never count out. With just 20 seconds left they find a way to break through Whitby’s defense to score and take this epic contest to overtime.

It would be fair to call them both champions, but this is ringette. There can only be one Provincial champion.

The game resumes for a rare third period at U12, and both teams are out for glory. Both teams are leaving nothing on the ice today.

The game resumes at an incredible pace. There is barely a break in the action when, after picking the Burlington centre’s pocket to snatch the ring, at 13:13, number 13, Kayden Jeffery turns quickly and fires on the net. Goal.

This awesome team of young ladies have just made Whitby ringette history, as they are the first U12P team to win the Provincial Championships in Ontario since 2007.

The jubilant victors celebrated as only 10 and 11 year-olds can, with shrieks, screams, hugs, tears. Later, through satisfied smiles, they’ll reflect on an amazing season that saw this young team also win gold in the London, Mississauga and Whitby tournaments, and how they will never forget this time.

“We will always be teammates,” centre, Jenna Martin said after the game. “And we will forever be 2019 U12 provincial champions.”

And there were no lack of smiles on the Whitby bench. “It was absolutely the most exciting, stressful, tiring and exhilarating weekend of ringette I have ever experienced,” said Coach Clyde. “I'm so proud of how the team came together, players and parents.  Everyone was so immersed in the experience.”
